What are Hors-d'-Ouevres?

The word hors-d'-ouevre (ord-erv) is a French word which refers to a kind of food that is served at the start of a meal. It literally means "outside the work".

The French people started to use this word in the 18th century to refer to food that is not served and eaten on the dining table - thus "outside the dining table". However, hors-d'-ouvres are now eaten on the dining table.
